1935년 형평사가 대동사로 이름을 바꾼 뒤 사실상 형평운동은 더 이상 계속되지 않았다. 그리고 해방 후 한국전쟁, 산업화 등을 거치면서 전통적인 지역공동체가 크게 바뀌어 신분의 잔재로 급속도로 사라지게 되었고, 그 와중에서 백정 집단도 없어졌다. 곧, 오늘날 우리 사회에서 관념 속으로는 백정이 남아 있지만, 사회 실체로서는 더 이상 존재하지 않는다. 조선시대의 신분 흔적은 남아 있어도 겉으로 드러내놓고 누구는 “양반이네”, “상놈이네” 떠들지 않는 것과 같다.
그러나 모든 인간이 인간으로서 존엄성을 누리고 평등한 대우를 받아가며 살아가야 한다는 형평운동의 주장은 여전히 필요한 상황이다. 아직도 사회 곳곳에 차별과 억압이 남아 있기 때문이다. 형평사가 창립된 진주에서는 1990년대에 들어서 그러한 형평운동의 정신을 존중하고 기리는 활동을 벌이기 시작하였다. 형평운동의 학술적 성과를 논의하는 국제학술회의가 열리고, 형평운동을 기리는 기념탑을 건립하며 그 정신을 계승하는 문화 활동과 인권운동이 일어났다. 이처럼 진주에서는 인간 존엄성 실현과 인권 존중을 실천하는 사회를 만들려고 한 형평운동의 정신을 귀중한 자산으로 삼고 있다. 관념적이거나 형식적인 구호가 아니라 인간 존엄과 평등 대우를 일상생활에서 실천하고 제도화하려는 형평운동은 모든 사람이 사람답게 서로 배려하며 더불어 살아야 한다는 것을 인류사회 전체에 일깨워주기 때문이다.
